You are invited to attend from one to all our 3rd Annual “Lost Boats of Mare Island” memorial services planned at Mare Island Sunday, October 11, 2009. Click here for directions to Mare Island and all services. First in the afternoon schedule is the flag-raising to commemorate the 66th anniversary of the loss at sea of Commander Morton and the crew of the Wahoo and to honor the crews of the other submarines built at Mare Island also “on eternal patrol”. We wish to thank John Kelly and the members of the Vallejo Rugby Club and the football team who is using the field that day for a game. They have all been incredibly generous with their time and wish to be a big part of our service. Please do thank them!

  1. Flag-raising will take place at Morton Field on Mare Island at 1pm including invited Travis AFB color guard, music by Terra Trio and members of the WWII Sub-Vets Vallejo Chapter

  2.   Memorial service of music, history and memories at St. Peter’s Chapel, 2–3:30pm. Our featured speaker will be Larry Maggini who has compiled photos and written a truly remarkable story of “The Lost Boats of Mare Island”. His slide show at the Chapel program is entitled “Moments in Time” based on excerpts from his book which will be available for sale at the events of the day and soon here on our website.

  3.   A reception is planned at Quarters C, 832 Walnut Ave. on Captain’s Row at 4pm.

  4. In the evening beginning at 5:30pm, join us as we lay a wreath for each vessel in Mare Island Strait at Berth 6 where Mare Island’s “lost boats” were moored while being overhauled at Mare Island between patrols. [Click here for a PDF flier about the Memorial service schedule
